Breast reduction is an ideal solution for individuals whose large, heavy breasts have caused them either physical or emotional discomfort. Dr. Silverstein performs breast reduction procedures either at the Integris Baptist Medical Center, Mercy Health Center, or our own 10,000 square foot, federally-licensed surgicenter. General anesthesia will be used to ensure that the patient is asleep throughout the entire procedure, which typically lasts between two and four hours.
An incision will be made around the areola, extending downwards, and along the crease beneath the breast. Dr. Silverstein will then remove the excess fat, tissue, and skin that have contributed to the cumbersome size of the breasts. The nipple and areola (the darker-colored area around the nipple) will be moved to a higher, more attractive location. If the areola is larger than the patient would prefer, its size can be reduced. Dr. Silverstein will adjust the remaining breast skin so that it's pulled taut around the areola, ensuring that new breast contours are as smooth and youthful-looking as possible.

A surgical bra will provide support for several weeks as the breasts continue to heal and swelling subsides. Stitches are generally removed within one to three weeks. Most patients are able to return to work approximately two weeks after their breast reduction procedure, as long as their jobs do not involve lifting or other strenuous activities. It's important for patients to refrain from high levels of exercise and exertion for a few additional weeks until their strength fully returns.
