We invite you to contact Dr. Silverstein to learn more about cosmetic ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, at our Oklahoma City practice, serving Tulsa and other Oklahoma communities.
Ear Surgery Candidates
Unlike other facial cosmetic surgery procedures that we offer, such as brow lift and face lift, ear surgery is performed more commonly on children than adults. By the time a child reaches the age of four, his or her ears are almost fully grown. If the ears are too large or prominent, the child can face taunting or teasing throughout the school-age years. Therefore, most ear surgery procedures are performed at our Oklahoma City practice for patients younger than fourteen; however, otoplasty can safely be performed for men or women of any age.
Parents are advised not to push otoplasty on their children; boys and girls who initiate requests for treatment are generally happier with their results and are more cooperative throughout the procedure. During an initial consultation, Dr. Silverstein will address any concerns that you or your child may have, and you will be given detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. He will also discuss with you how the treatment will be performed, as well as what type of anesthesia will be used.
The Otoplasty Procedure
Cosmetic ear surgery generally takes about two to three hours to perform. After making a small incision that is hidden behind the ear, Dr. Silverstein will remove and sculpt cartilage to form ears that are close to the head, proportionate, and attractively shaped. Sometimes, permanent stitches are used to help the ears maintain their new appearance. After Ear Surgery
The ears will be carefully bandaged immediately after otoplasty. In a few days, these dressings will be changed for a lighter wrapping that resembles a headband. Dr. Silverstein can prescribe medication to reduce headaches or other discomfort associated with the procedure.
Adults are generally able to return to work within five days of otoplasty treatment, and children are usually able to return to school approximately seven days after their procedure. Sports, playground activity, and other situations that could result in forceful contact with the ears should be avoided for about a month.
