Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

December 31, 2011 @ 01:36 PM — by Dr. Silverstein

If you want to enhance your overall appearance, one of the best ways to go about this is altering the appearance of your nose. Since it’s such a prominent facial feature, just a slight change to the contour of the nose can really have a drastic affect on your other facial features. When you meet with an Oklahoma City plastic surgeon, he or she will be able to explain your many options for a rhinoplasty and may even help refine your aesthetic goals while meeting your needs.

We’d like to look at the basics of rhinoplasty right now and compare the two different surgical methods so you understand what to expect from surgery and how we can achieve excellent results.

About Rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty is a facial plastic surgery option which targets the nose itself. The surgery is performed to recontour the bridge and enhance the overall shape of the nose. It’s a safe surgery, and though results may be dramatic, we will always do our best to be conservative in terms of our methods and techniques.

Best Candidates for Rhinoplasty

The best candidates for Oklahoma City rhinoplasty are people who have issues with the size, shape, or prominence of their nose. These patients may have bumps or ridges on the bridge that they are self-conscious about, or may want the bridge of their nose straightened or adjusted. People who have had their noses broken in accidents are also good candidates, and in some cases certain respiratory problems can be addressed through a rhinoplasty.

The Surgical Techniques for Rhinoplasty

There are two different surgical techniques for a rhinoplasty: open surgery and closed surgery. Our plastic surgery specialists in Oklahoma City will be able to explain them both to you in more detail, but here’s a brief comparison.

Open Rhinoplasty

During an open rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon will make an incision along the skin between your nostrils. This will allow the surgeon more access to the structures of the nose. Scarring will be minimal and well hidden given where this incision is placed.

Closed Rhinoplasty

During a closed rhinoplasty, all of the incisions are hidden within the nostrils. No external incisions are made at all. The downside is that surgeons are not able to achieve the level of aesthetic adjustment in a closed rhinoplasty as they would in an open rhinoplasty.

Determining the Best Option for Your Needs

Because each patient’s needs are different, open rhinoplasty may be a better option than close rhinoplasty and vice versa. It all depends on the extent of work that needs to be performed. Again, we stress that we will always use the most conservative technique possible. We will also make sure that you are well informed about the surgical technique prior to surgery so you can make the best possible decision about your appearance.
